Australia and Me: Anne Marie Hiskey

May 25, 2015 • Local,

Anne Marie Hiskey, from Doolin.

Anne Marie Hiskey, from Doolin.

Where are you from in Ireland?

Doolin, Co. Clare.

How long have you been in Australia?

I moved here with my Australian husband and son Tadhg in December 2010.

What brought you here?

My husband had lived in Ireland for 10-plus years so it was time for him to move back. We also wanted a better quality of life for our son.

Describe your career path.

I was really lucky to get full-time work soon after arriving in an Irish bar. I eventually became a duty manager and enjoyed my job but I was blessed with my daughter Aoife so I went on maternity leave and then became a full time mum!

Best things about living in Australia?

All the different activities my kids can do. There are so many beautiful parks and playgrounds in Adelaide. The standard response is the weather and, yes, this is true but, boy, it gets hot and dry in Adelaide.

Worst things about living in Australia?

Not having my family living five minutes from me like home. It doesn’t matter how long I live here, Doolin is home!

What, if anything, do you miss about Ireland?

I miss certain foods. I also miss how peaceful Doolin is in the winter; it’s pure bliss.

Have you ever considered moving back to Ireland?

I plan to move back when I’m retirement age. When my kids are all grown up.

How come?

I love Ireland but it’s not the best place at the moment so we need to think of our kids’ future and what would be secure for them.
