Stephen Kelly has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad for Saturday morning’s World Cup qualifier against Sweden.

The Reading defender asked for permission not to join up with Giovanni Trapattoni’s 23-man party for family reasons.

“He [Trapattoni] has been in touch with the manager, who has given Stephen permission to stay at home on this occasion,” an FAI spokesman said.

Trapattoni has been hit by a series of withdrawals through injury with Aiden McGeady, Sean St Ledger and Joey O’Brien all unfit for the Sweden game and the trip to Austria four days later.

Channel 33 is showing the game live in a number of venues across Australia on Saturday morning, with kick-off at 4.45am.

The game can be seen at; The Star in Sydney, the Celtic Club in Melbourne, Treasury Casino in Brisbane, Adelaide Casino and Sky City in Darwin.

The Irish squad met in Portmarnock  yesterday before beginning preparations in Malahide later today (Monday).
