Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni had some good news after Anthony Pilkington scored for Norwich City upon his return from injury.
The winger was named in Trapattoni’s provisional squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers and the Italian seems happy to pursue Pilkington, despite his withdrawal from five previous Ireland squads.
The Norwich man was on target in his side’s 6-3 victory over Bury in the Capital One Cup. The Canaries’ second goal came after Wes Hoolahan – also in Trapattoni’s squad – provided a slide-rule pass to Pilkington, who arrowed a shot past the Bury goalkeeper.
Elsewhere, new Hull recruit Robbie Brady came to his side’s rescue by scoring a very late winner against Leyton Orient.
The former Manchester United academy player failed to make Trapattoni’s provisional squad last week. The coach has publicly expressed concerns about the 21-year-old’s workrate.
Provisional 29-man squad: Forde, Westwood, Randolph, O’Shea, O’Brien, St Ledger, Wilson, Coleman, Kelly, O’Dea, Clark, Dunne, McShane, Whelan, McCarthy, Green, Hendrick, McGeady, Pilkington, McClean, Brady, Meyler, Hoolahan, Long, Keane, Sammon, Walters, Madden, Cox.
